Following the success of the 51st San Francisco International Film Festival, I was selected to help redesign the San Francisco Film Society’s website. In addition to screening films and holding film festivals, the SFFS provides youth education programs, filmmaker sponsorships and residencies. One of the main goals for the new website was to alert a wider audience of their many services, as well as giving greater visibility to their screenings and events in order to drive ticket sales and donations.
Our biggest challenge was meeting the need for a better way to navigate the Film Society’s ever-changing line up of events and films. With flexibility and customization in mind, we created an innovative calendar that gives visitors the choice of viewing events by week (as a list) or month (as a grid), dramatically improving upon the old user experience where upcoming events were simply a long list.
The interactive grid calendar displays all SFFS events in a given month, with rollovers containing film synopses and dates, and allows the viewer to filter the results based on the type of event. The list view lets viewers select an upcoming week from a dropdown menu and browse that week’s films and events.
